Mineral scaling (plugging of surfaces by mineral deposits) is a potentially serious problem in membrane-based desalination systems that can reduce recoveries, increase downtime and scale control chemical usage. Mineral scaling is an even larger problem in the larger water treatment and energy industries with scaling of water conduits and heat exchange surfaces. Early detection of onset of scaling could allow more timely and cost-effective intervention to prevent scaling and reverse its effects. One of the bases of the company’s products is an ultrasonic technique for fouling sensing. The technique is based on the change in the shape and arrival time of ultrasonic waves reflected from the surface being monitored. When the surface is fouled the arrival time and shape of the reflected wave is changed. Therefore the ultrasonic sensor acts as a null sensor and allows use of existing surfaces as the baseline for detecting changes. This makes the sensor quite sensitive to the initiation of fouling processes. Special algorithms have been developed that allow sensing this change in real time. One of the inherent advantages of ultrasonic sensors is that they are non-invasive. Scaling prevention is achieve by applying Flow Reversal (FR) technology in Reverse Osmosis (RO) desalination systems. FR is a Smart process for scale prevention on membranes surface, works by periodic switching the flow direction in RO pressure vessels array. The technology is applicable to RO base desalination plants via Retrofit of existing desalination plants or grassroots design of new plants
